A Cold Philadelphia Move

Stone and I arrived in Philly close to midnight.  It was a bitter, wintry night, twenty-three degree's when our plane landed.  The wind was blowing and there was snow on the ground, brrrrr....  This was going to be a cold trip.  Michael was right on time.  We grabbed our luggage as he pulled up through the pick up lane.  Quickly we gave hugs and loaded up the bags.  I welcomed the warmth of his vehicle with the heat blasting. He even thought of dear old mom and had the heat seater on, how sweet was that.  At this time of night there was very little traffic on the road. Maybe it had something to do with the weather.  We chatted about the move, school, and all the latest happenings since we had seen them six weeks ago.   In no time we had arrived at their new place that he and Delia had moved into just that afternoon.  Stone and I were excited that movers had been hired to move them. All that was left to do was help them unpack and set up house.   Delia had everything ready when we arrived.  Towels were in the bathroom and beds made.  Before leaving for our flight to Philly, I had made some Chocolate Chip cookies and packed them in my suit case.  After retrieving the cookies, we gathered in the kitchen where we stayed up until 2:30 in the morning talking and eating.  Finally, we went to bed knowing it was going to be a long few days ahead of us.
As morning approached I was ready to begin our day.   Delia was up starting the coffee for Stone, as Speck and Baloo made their rounds to make sure all were awake.  The sun was out, but it was sooooo cold.  I was dreading leaving the confines of the warmth, but excited to help pick out new things for their dwelling.  Delia and I spent six hours out and about running errands and shopping.   No matter what I did, I couldn't get warm.  I had four layers on, just not the right kind for Philly weather.   All the while, Michael and Stone stayed behind working.  Stone's official job was a box crusher and disposal of boxes.  By the end he was a master.
On our Third night in Philly we took time to go out for dinner.  I had read about a place called Coyote Crossing, http://coyotecrossing.com, a Mexican restaurant and had mentioned it to Michael and Delia.  Neither had heard of it but each are always up for trying new places.  We arrived later in the evening, so even though the place was full we didn't have to wait.  From what I understand that is not the normal, especially in the summer.  The outdoor patio is a huge draw.   The restaurant, located in a neighborhood of houses, had just be renovated.  The outside was twinkling with lights, drawing us in. The fireplace was all aglow. My only disappointment was there was no available setting for us next to the fireplace.  I could see it, but not feel it. I needed warmth!!! We had a delightful evening, the atmosphere was festive and the food really good.  I was so excited about dessert.  I had never had Tres Leches, Three Milk Cake.  It was luscious and I devoured every bit, not leaving a morsel.  I will definitely be making one of these in the future.   When it was time to leave, Michael retrieved his vehicle and drove up to the door, saving us from having to be out in the frosty weather any longer than necessary.  That was so sweet.  After arriving back home we had intended on working some more on unpacking. But after a full day and full stomachs, we just couldn't do it.  We called it a night.
By Sunday we had a lot done.  Delia and I ran a few more errands while Michael and Stone did the same.  Everyone made it back in time for the Dallas Cowboy's football game.  Delia made guacamole, chips where set out and the wings where in the oven.  All that was needed was for the Cowboy's to win!  Well, at least the food was good.  Even Baloo was upset that the Cowboy's lost.  He was moping around, it was his birthday and he wanted a win!  Delia had picked up a doggy birthday cake and I had gotten him a bag of his favorite treats.  Michael served Baloo and Speck each a piece of the cake.  Neither one wasted anytime consuming it.
With the game a loss, we moved on.  It was time to complete the unpacking.   By the time we left for the airport the next day, all the boxes where unpacked and all but two pictures where hung. It looked like a home and a beautiful one at that.  As Michael left to catch the train to work, it was time for Stone and I to leave and head back to Tennessee.   The snow was gone and in its place was rain as Delia drove us to the airport.  Our flight home was scheduled to leave at four in the afternoon.  Apparently there was some mechanical problem with the plane that didn't make me feel real good.  Stone had received numerous messages that our flight was delayed.  Honestly I didn't think we where going to make it home last night.  Finally they called us to board.  We where so excited to be on our way. When we arrived home, Stone and I stated it was sure good to be home.  The next time we go to Philly I will make sure its when the weather is warm.

Happy 2nd Birthday Baloo

Dinner At Michael and Delia's On Our Last Night In Philadelphia

Our day had come to an end, and it was our last night in Philadelphia. Michael and Delia prepared dinner for us at home. We started with an appetizer of cheeses and crackers which had been purchased at Riehls Cheese Shop http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/merchants/53-riehls-deli-and-cheese-shop in the Reading Terminal Market the day before.  My first taste was of the Coburn Port Wine Cheese.  Yes, it was very good, but let me tell you I had never, ever had Chocolate Cheese Fudge.  Wow, this stuff is AMAZING!!!!!! I had to make myself stop.  I know it's really a dessert cheese instead of an appetizer, but I just had to have some at that moment.  Why did I have that young lady cut us a smaller portion????? What was I thinking? Apparently I wasn't.

Delia and I set their "make due" table, while Michael was in the kitchen cooking.  Michael, living in an apartment with no access to a grill, has learned why the chefs in restaurants do not grill their meats, opting to cook them stove top and at times finish them off in the oven.  They tasted better!  Stone said and I agree, "the two nights the young couple cooked for us at home was the best meals that we had while in Philly".  Not that the meals eaten out were not good, they where very good, but Michael and Delia can cook.  Quickly, Delia and I put together the salad, while Stone poured the wine. Gathering around the table, we toast to the ending of another marvelous day, and glad that we were together once again.

It was our last night and Michael offered us a chance to beat him in a game of Monopoly.  Well, being competitive as I am, we took him up on it.  We cleared away the dishes and set up the game, knowing we would be at it for a few hours.  I hurriedly showered so when the game was over I would be ready for bed.  Quickly into the game I was loosing and Delia was coming in behind me, though she held on much longer than I.  It looked as though Michael was going to win yet again.  Stone, at the last minute pulled through and made an amazing win as the clock struck midnight.

First Time Attractions In Philadelphia

I am a big fan of Rocky, so of course I wanted to see the "Rocky Statue" and the "Rocky Steps".  After watching his movies, I always felt as though I could conquer the world.  I quickly realized that it was not possible.  We hurriedly took pictures of the statue and then decided to run the famous Rocky Steps.  Well, maybe not all of us, but all did make it to the top, "99 steps",  revealing a great view of Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the Philadelphia Skyline. We took numerous pictures and descended the stairs. This was a lot easier that going up.  From hither we walked back, passing the Fairmont Water Works, now placed on the National Register Of Historic Places.  It currently houses a restaurant and interpretive center. We continue on, seeing other sites.   Philadelphia, known as the City of Brotherly Love, has a Love sign in Love Park.  Of course, I had to see this and have a picture.  There where tons of people at the park, numerous having their picture taken with the sign.  We wait our turn and snap our shots. Since there was a crowd at the square, we quickly leave, having got what we came for.  Walking back to the train, we pass John F. Kennedy Blvd, where the Historic City Hall is located. This building is impressive with beautiful architecture and colossal size.

Philadelphia, The Origin Of Our Nation

Stone and I were excited to see the Liberty Bell, an iconic piece of history. We also visited Independence Hall where the Declaration Of Independence was signed.   Our first stop was to see the Liberty Bell, the symbol of freedom.  There was a long line that moved quickly into the museum that was built to house the bell.  Stone, Delia and I roamed through the institution, reading about the history, finally making it to the bell.  It was moving to stand so close to an iconic piece of history.  The inscription on the bell reads, "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof".

In 1776 the famous Liberty Bell was rung from the lower tower of Independence Hall.  The Declaration Of Independence and the Constitution of the United States was adopted and signed in this building.  Many decisions have been made in these rooms, among them the design of the American Flag.   Imagine standing on the same floor where  George Washington, Ben Franklin or John Hancock once stood.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary was previously the most renowned and costly prison on earth.  This was the world's first prison. Its grand architecture with vaulted, sky-lit cells, today lays in ruins.  "Slick Willie" Sutton and Al Capone were once detained in these walls.  "Scarface" Capone, Chicago's famous bootlegger was in prison for the first time in 1929. While passing through Philadelphia heading home, he was arrested for caring a concealed, unlicensed .38 revolver.  He received a one year sentence.  Capone served 8 months of his sentence before being released.  The officials were generous to Capone, allowing him comforts other inmates weren't granted.  His cell was decked out with rugs, lamps, fine furniture, paintings, and a radio.  He was known for listening to waltz music.  In 1930 Al Capone was released from the Eastern State Penitentiary and became an international celebrity.  Many, wanting a glimpse of the famous bootlegger, gathered along with movie cameras outside the Penitentiary walls.

Allegedly, in 1924, Pennsylvania Govenor sentenced The Cat Murdering Dog, Pep to life in prison at the Easter State Penitentiary for murdering his wife's cat.  Prison documents show the dog was issued an inmate number (No. C-2559).

Michael, Delia, Stone and I walked through the numerous cell blocks.  Among those, you would have The Hole or what they called "Klondike".  It was a windowless cell where prisoners where sent who broke the rules.  There was even a Synagogue used by Jewish inmates. Never more than 80 Jews were at the Penitentiary at any one time.  There were ruins of Death Row, the Barbershop, the Kitchens, Hospital and many more.  Interesting fact, did you know the Penitentiary had flushable toilets before the White House?   You roam through these cellblocks and wonder how you would survive being locked up in a place like this and glad you will never know the answer to this question.  This penitentiary was built to instill true remorse, or penitence in the soul of the convicts.  Did it?

We left through these doors of the castly style fortress into the bright sunshine away from the eerie, mysterous, somewhat spooky ruins of the past.  If you like history as we do, you would enjoy the visit into the past at the Eastern State Penitentiary.
Into the bright sunshine.

Hungry after being in prision for a couple hours, we were paroled and made our way over to Jake's Firehouse http://www.jacksfirehouse.com for some lunch.  Jake's is set in a 19th centry firehouse, where we sat at the outdoor seating next to an urban waterfall.  In the bright sunlight of the early afternoon we ordered lunch and reflected on our morning at the Penitentiary that was located directly across the street.  I guess they could tell we were starving, having been just released from prision.  They brought out this huge plate of different breads, served with this delicious sour cherry compote.  We nibbled on our bread while wating for our meal.  After a short time, our food was served. All was delicious and just what we needed to continue our day.

Philadelphia With Ben Franklin

Dogs need love'n to.  Upon awakening, Baloo is demanding attention from Michael.  They snuggle up on Baloo's massive bed spending a little time together before we're off for the day.

Our day began with a trip to the Franklin Institute by mistake.  Michael, "bless his heart", thought he purchased tickets to the Philadelphia Museum Of Arts.  Instead of a day of Art History we were overtaken with children.  They were everywhere.  Then making the best of it, we looked at the exhibits, trying some out, but many were not working.

Planning ahead, we go to Reading Terminal Market to buy what we needed for tomorrow night's dinner.  Reading Terminal is one of the oldest farmers markets in the country.  The market is huge with many different stalls of fresh produce, fish, various selections of local and international favorites.  Stone and I were overwhelmed with so much to choose. We were like kids in a candy store, we wanted it all.  Michael and Delia toured us through the entire market and then asked, where would you like to eat lunch, as there are multiple eating establishments throughout the market.  We made our selections and sat among the many people who were there eating and shopping. We quickly devoured our lunch and made our plans on what we will need for our upcoming dinner tomorrow evening.  We decided to split up as Stone and Delia were off to select the most important of our purchases, donuts for breakfast from Beiler's Donuts http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/merchants/56-beiler-s-donuts-and-salads.  They bought a dozen of various kinds.  Stone stopped as he walked through the isles to explain to unknown people about the different kinds and tell of his favorite, PLAIN glazed!!!!  Michael and I headed over to the fish market, Wan's Seafood http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/merchants/68-wan-s-seafood to buy the biggest shrimp I have every seen and then to the butcher, Giunta's Prime Shop http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/merchants/95-giunta-s-prime-shop  for the sirloin steak.  The meats done, we make our way over to the fresh produce to purchase our salad fixings.  With our shopping done, we meet up with Stone and Delia to head home.

We make it home, put away our purchases, and take Speck and Baloo to the dog park for about an hour.  They are so cute running wild with all there friends.  It was a beautiful day so the park was full.  They would run and play, then come over just to make sure you where still there and watching them. They are so much like children and then they would be off again.  Evening arrived, and its been a long day.  We decided to go to PYT for dinner.  A semi-retro diner with classic or maybe not so classic diner food and milk shakes.  What makes their's different is you can get a burger on a donut, and milkshakes with alcohol.  Who wouldn't like that???
